The kitchen, today

What’s Cooking in the Kitchen

Two things happen in a kitchen at the same time. Both of them live here.

Something is on the stove. You hear it before you see it — the low knock of a lid, fat settling in a pan, a spoon set down on a folded towel.

Somebody at the table is halfway through a sentence and does not stop when you come in. Nobody hands you an agenda. You are simply in the room now.

Stand there a second before you decide what you came for.

The two doorways

Right now

The longer writing stays in the Journal, where it has always been — letters, essays, reflections by the fire, the pieces meant to outlast the week. Nothing moved here to make room for this.

The Path Continues

A kitchen is not a page. Somebody is going to be hungry tonight, and that is the actual invitation.
