Wonder
A scroll is a small thing to carry.
Light. Worn soft at the folds.
You did not write it.
Someone troubled to set it down, hoping it would one day reach you.
And here it is, in your hands.
You can unroll it, or leave it closed.
Some things you carry.
Some things, in time, carry you.
Meaning
A scroll is not a rule. A rule is imposed; a scroll is entrusted.
It comes to you from beyond yourself — a truth someone received before you, carried, and handed on, hoping it would reach you in time.
This is the first freedom of the journey: not what you are made to obey, but what you are willing to receive. A scroll can be taken up, or left lying in the road.
A scroll left unread is only paper.
But a scroll carried long enough begins to read the one who carries it.
Alignment
Not every word placed in your hands is yours to carry.
Alignment is learning to receive well: to take in what is given without swallowing it whole, to weigh a word slowly, to let the ones that are not yours fall from your hands.
The ones worth keeping are rarely the cleverest. They are the ones that were true when nothing else was — the ones that found you, somehow, exactly when you needed them.
To live aligned with the scrolls is to stay open-handed: willing to be reached, willing to be given something you did not earn.
Reflection
- What words were handed to you by someone who carried them first?
- Which have you received — and which are still lying unopened?
- Is there a truth you keep setting down because receiving it would ask something of you?
- If a single word were entrusted to you for the whole of the journey, would your hands be open enough to take it?
Practice
Think of one true thing that was handed to you — by scripture, by someone who loved you, by a moment you were given and did not earn.
You do not have to master it. You do not have to live up to it yet.
Today, simply receive it. Say, quietly: this was given to me, and I will not set it down.
Then carry it — lightly, the way you carry a scroll.
